The former Oude Ambachtsschool in Zwolle was converted into
starter homes and studio workshops. The listed building from 1934
by architects Baart and Krook underwent complete renovation and was
transformed into a contemporary residential-work complex.
The building, comprising two, three-floor wings situated at right angles to each other, converges in a central stairwell. The formal entrance is on the outer corner, and the entrance that was intended for the pupils is on the inner corner. Both wings have central corridors with classrooms on both sides.
On the ground floor the classrooms were converted into studio workshops. The starter homes are on the first and second floors: large, high and light classrooms with a core block for sanitary facilities and kitchen. For maximum comfort within the homes, a second wall has been added behind the steel-window walls. In this way the elevation remains intact and the living space is shielded against sunlight, noise and heat loss.
The original function of the building is visible in the impressive stairwell and in the spacious corridors. The building has been restored to ensure it is fit for the future: energy usage has been greatly reduced, sustainable energy applied and the most sustainable materials and detailing possible have been used.
