Construction Nationaal Onderwijsmuseum in Dordrecht started
Yesterday, construction works started on the transformation of the `De Holland´ building in Dordrecht into a Nationaal Onderwijsmuseum (national educational museum). This municipal monument from 1939 was designed by Sybold van Ravesteijn. In 1980 the building was converted into a supermarket and, as a result, the façade was seriously damaged, volumes were added and the greater part of the interior demolished.
First, all the additions from the eighties will be removed and the demolished façade sections will be reconstructed. More than 1000 m2 of exhibition space will be created on the raised floor and in the basement, where the open-plan office floor was considered an ultra-modern working space in 1939.
Educational and catering space will be created in Van Ravesteijn's original design format on both sides of the entrance. A new, centrally-located stairway will access the three floors. The board room on the roof top will be restored to its original state and it will be used as a representative, lettable facility.
The opening of the national educational museum is foreseen by the end of 2014.
