Book presentation "Waar nieuw en oud raken" in Teylersmuseum
Today Hubert-Jan Henket presented his book Waar nieuw en oud raken - een pleidooi voor houdbare moderniteit in architectuur (Where new and old meet - a plea for enduring modernity in architecture) in the Teylersmuseum in Haarlem.
Waar nieuw en oud raken (Where new and old meet, a plea for enduring modernity in architecture) is a lavishly-illustrated and personal plea for sustainable design of the built environment, based on harmony between the universal and the context, between individual and community, between linear and cyclic, between the new and the existing.
Since his student days Hubert-Jan Henket has been inspired by the architecture of the Modern Movement. On the basis of three centuries of architectural history he shows how the development of modern thinking dominates our actions today. In order to attain enduring modernity, attention is focused on the user, and architects will need to concentrate on the intensive reuse of buildings with their history and context as important preconditions.
Hubert-Jan Henket explains his views clearly and with passion, for anyone interested in urban environments and architecture. He underpins his opinions with the results of research into the life cycle of buildings that he has accumulated during his twenty-two years as a Professor in Delft and Eindhoven. Using photographs and anecdotes he explains in detail the genesis of his designs, demonstrating how fascinating architecture can be and how that which, in the end, appears simple is the result of lengthy deliberation, creativity and skill.
